Don't get me wrong. I'm all for the conservation of the environment, but I think Earth Hour's noble intention was wrongly exploited to the max, if not in vain.
There are many ways to do it than paying millions on ads and promotions just to save an hour of electricity. How many t-shirts are printed just for the ads? How many lights are needed for the promotions and photo-shooting? Just start it as a habit not just some cheap publicity stunt for the artist and etc.
I’m not being negative but if you want to save the world, do it every day and you can see how much is the government spend on ads about safety on the road but all of these go down to the chute as I can still see morons cutting queues everyday that causes all the jam.
As many before me have pointed out, if we are serious about Earth Hour, it should be done on a daily basis, not just once a year or a month.
Basically earth hour should not only stop there. In fact many got a wrong perception on this. Switch off all the lights but in return, we burn candle which eventually produce more CO2. If everybody is serious about global warming, please get one copy of Inconvenient Truth. You can get the relevant facts from it.
Secondly we are still using fossil fuel instead of nuclear or solar power to generate electricity. No doubt that nuclear energy creates toxic products but the amount use can save gallons barrel of crude oil every year.
Besides that, I don't think it takes much effort to condemn the polluters of the environment. While every mile begins with the first step, tackling mammoth issues requires the first one too, just as any smaller issues. I happen to think that the issue of protecting the environment is just as important as the issue of criticizing those who pollutes it. So, while some people put in so much effort to conserve the environment, I find it very ironic and hypocritical that none of them did anything to complain against those who would destroy it which was why I have this perception that Earth Hour is a waste of time.
It’s like taking the bucket to scoop water from a boat filled with holes. I would prefer to support a cause that really tackles the problem at the end of the day than merely highlighting it with the knowledge that nothing will be done at the end of the day.
If you truly care for the environment, then perhaps you should speak up against all the main culprits who are destroying the environment. Not doing some publicity stunts on how you care about the environment but are not willing to get your hands dirtied when it matters most.
