I like it when people start telling me "By golly how much you've changed. You look and sound so differently now" when they see my Facebook or some other social networking profile. Obviously I change. We all do. If you're a materialist, you know how this has great consequences. Like the fact that you are not who you are in the previous second, because all your atoms and ions are vibrating and moving and are in random different positions at every moment in time or the fact that you do not exist last year and you shall not exist next year. Each carbon atom, cell and nitrogen gas in your lungs, for example, would have been replaced, perhaps lying in the right lung of the iguana in Brazil right now.
There is a saying... "Memory forms and defines who we are" by someone famous in the field of cognitive psychology (Yes, I remember every detail but the person's name).
But what I get immense glee out of is when people comment through looking at my social network profile. I've changed, it seems or when I look at the new uploaded pictures of a friend's prom night. He's changed or the one of your girl friend with her new romantic beau. She's changed.
As to why I get immense glee, I can't articulate it in words. Maybe it's the thought that I've changed. Or maybe the thought that they think I've changed.
Maybe it's just because the person saying it is someone you once look to for opinions about you.
Then again... there's always the element of showing off your best, creating this somewhat glamorous life you're living through your social networking profile. You don't explicitly say it - but it shows through the subtleties of revealing photos, revealing school names, the people on your friend list, the people writing on/in your comment box... the way you confidently write in the "About Me" section. After all, we all like a little bit of self-advertisement.
And what better way than to do it for the world to see... your likes, dislikes, movies, books and life.
